Life on the mining frontier that is the Kakadu National Park has never been anything but complicated for the management of the Ranger uranium mine and its ultimate controlling owner Rio Tinto.
As if to prove that big things really do start small, on Saturday morning a little hole in one of Ranger's seven leach tanks very quickly transformed into a critical failure that resulted in up to 1.45 million litres of uranium ore, water, mud and acid spilling at the Ranger processing plant.
